Gallery Yamaki Fine Art welcomes the long-established Parisian gallery “Galerie Jean Fournier” as its guest and presents a wide range of artists from Gallery Yamaki Fine Art, including “Mono-ha” artists such as Susumu KOSHIMIZU and Kenji INUMAKI, and their contemporaries Kimiyo MISHIMA and young artist Eri MORIMOTO, and From Gallery Jean Fournier, Louis CANE and Claude VIALLAT of “Support / Surface” and Frédéric LUCIEN, who were influenced by this movement, will be introduced.

By comparing “Mono-ha” and “Support / Surface,” both of which were postwar art trend, and even exhibiting young artists who were influenced by and developed these trends, the exhibition will examine the transnational aesthetic and its essence.

While the Mono-ha brought forth works that vividly presented the phases of matter by letting the materials themselves speak in diverse ways, Support / Surface moved toward material expression, deconstructing the conventional framework of painting in the regions of southern France.

Through the Japanese and French movements that took place around the same time that raised questions about the classical aesthetic consciousness that underlies the expressions we had taken for granted, we will free art from the world of images, subjects, and meanings, and reexamine the universality of beauty and the diverse possibilities of expression.

Gallery Yamaki Fine Art opened in July 2006 in downtown Kobe, opening with a solo exhibition of Louis Cane, a master of Support / Surfaces, one of the art trends that took place in France from the late 1960s to the early 1970s.
The gallery plans at least five exhibitions a year and vigorously introduces a wide range of works by postwar artists from Japan and France as well as young artists from Europe and Japan.
At the same time, the gallery actively participates in overseas art fairs. It has participated in Art Basel Hong Kong six times between 2013 and 2019, and has also participated in the New York Frieze and other art fairs, continuously introducing Japanese contemporary art on the international stage.

Galerie Jean Fournier is one of the oldest Parisian galleries for modern and contemporary art which is still in activity to this day. The gallery played a key role in the history of French
abstraction and the promotion of American painting in France during the 1960s and 1970s. Ever since Jean Fournier's passing in 2006, the gallery has been involved with mainly French artists, born in the 1960s, who have carried on a tradition of abstraction and color. Yet, during the last ten years, a fresh identity has been forged with new artists for whom abstraction is no longer considered in opposition to figurativeness, and for whom contemporary painting is viewed in terms of its ability to convey an image. The programming of the gallery is structured along both a progressive and patrimonial angle. At the rate of six exhibitions per year, in the premises of 22, rue du Bac, monographic exhibitions reflect the recent research of our artists, alternating with group shows that establish links between then and now, revitalizing the collection assembled over the years. The gallery's archive is comprised of photographic and epistolary documents which are a record of the many exchanges between Jean Fournier and the artists involved with the gallery. The gallery regularly lends its archives and its collection for major national and international exhibitions.
