MAKI Gallery and galerie frank elbaz’s collaborative presentation features works by Mungo Thomson, Kaz Oshiro, and Sheila Hicks. The three internationally renowned artists use their respective practices to recontextualize everyday objects and phenomena in unexpected ways.

Los Angeles-based artist Mungo Thomson is known for a diverse body of conceptual work that challenges institutions and perceptions, often wittily engaging with printed and archival materials such as magazine covers, advertisements, wall calendars, and cardboard delivery boxes. His works astutely yet playfully dissect the anatomy and effects of mass-media, societal roles, and consumerism.

Okinawa-born, Los Angeles-based artist Kaz Oshiro creates meticulous reproductions of mundane objects—sourced from domestic and industrial spaces—with traditional painting materials such as wood, canvas, and acrylic paint. Following the traditions of trompe-l’oeil and the readymade, Oshiro’s works shrewdly subvert expectations and probe an eternal philosophical question—the distinction between reality and art.

Since the late 1950s, American artist Sheila Hicks has been producing work exceptionally difficult to categorize. Knotting, wrapping, folding, twisting, and stacking wool, linen, and cotton: these are only some of the techniques and materials that have seen her undermine conventional artistic categories and their hierarchical relationships. A pupil of Josef Albers at Yale, Hicks is the heir to both a Modernist spirit—which deems the distinctions between fine art, decoration, and design to be unimportant—and a textile practice that has its roots in pre-Columbian America.

MAKI Gallery was first established in 2003 in Tokyo, with the aim of promoting works by seminal avant-garde Japanese artists of the 1950s-60s. The gallery has since gradually shifted its focus to working with emerging contemporary artists. After opening a location in the bustling, high-end shopping district of Omotesando in 2014, MAKI Gallery opened two expansive, museum-caliber spaces in the growing gallery hub of Tennoz in 2020. Across these three outposts, MAKI Gallery presents a broad range of works by internationally active artists, including Mungo Thomson, Miya Ando, Susumu Kamijo, and Marius Bercea, while also introducing younger Japanese artists, such as Anne Kagioka Rigoulet and Takuro Tamura, to a global audience. The gallery has participated in many international art fairs such as Frieze New York, The Armory Show, and West Bund Art & Design.

galerie frank elbaz opened in 2002 in the district of Le Marais, Paris. The gallery celebrates French artists by presenting the work of Davide Balula, Bernard Piffaretti, and others. Simultaneously, it offers insight into the American scene, exhibiting artists such as Ja’Tovia Gary, Sheila Hicks, William Leavitt, Ari Marcopoulos, Kaz Oshiro, Mungo Thomson, and Blair Thurman. The European scene is also explored with artist Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili. Over the years, the gallery has focused on rediscovering historical artists including Wallace Berman, Jay DeFeo, Dmitri Prigov, as well as artists from the Zagreb conceptual scene, such as the Gorgona Group (Julije Knifer, Mangelos), Tomislav Gotovac, and Mladen Stilinovic. The gallery regularly invites curators and artists to propose exhibitions projects. It participates in many international art fairs such as Frieze Art Fair (New York), Art Basel (Basel) and Art Basel Miami Beach (Miami).
