NCA | Nichido Contemporary Art
(Tokyo)
nca | nichido contemporary art is pleased to present a solo show by Shinya Imanishi.
Imanishi creates his paintings through the repetition of a set of actions: first, the artist applies several, thick layers of oil paint to the canvas, then, through a vigorous touch, he leaves visible brushstrokes on the painted surface and finally scoops out the paint as he goes.
The smallest change in our perspective or stance brings to light new visual possibilities that seek to unveil the ambiguity and uncertainty of the things we deem familiar.
Recently, through his paintings Imanishi has been working on how to make the invisible visible, relations, phenomena, colors, shapes and their interaction with the continuous changes in light that are so easily overlooked, by capturing nature and its impermanence, while investigating the material essence of the medium.
Born 1990, Nara, Japan; lives in Nara.
Since graduating top of his class from Kyoto University of Art and Design with a Major in Painting in 2015, he has been carrying on his artistic practice between Kyoto and Nara. Recipient of 2020’s Shell Art Award Exhibition Grand Prix, his work has been featured in several exhibitions, both in Japan and abroad, strengthening his presence within the contemporary art scene, especially in Asia with shows in Korea and Taiwan.
