Tokyo Gallery + BTAP

(Tokyo)

Gallery Information

Tokyo Gallery + BTAP, founded in 1950, is the first contemporary art gallery in Tokyo. At its inception, the gallery introduced Western avant-garde artists, such as Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein and Jackson Pollock to Japan; and promoted Japanese artists, such as Yoshishige Saito, Taro Okamoto, Jiro Takamatsu and the Gutai and Mono-ha artists domestically and abroad. In the early 1970s, the gallery begun working with Korean artists such as Kim Whanki, Lee Ufan and Park Seo-bo; and in the 1980s, it started exhibiting yet-unknown Chinese artists including Cai Guo-Qiang and Xu Bing. In 2002, the gallery opened Beijing Tokyo Art Projects (BTAP) in Beijing. Now operating as Tokyo Gallery + BTAP, the gallery continues its mission of discovering and promoting both established and rising artists.
